The Indalo rainbow warrior symbol is used as a good luck charm or talisman. It originates from paintings that were found on the walls of ancient Neolithic caves in Almeria, southern Spain, in the middle of the last Century and which date back over 4,500 years. It is the figure of a man holding a rainbow in outstretched arms – not dissimilar to other such paintings found around the world, which are also referred to as rainbow warriors – and especially in the prophecies of the native American Indian tribes such as the Sioux, the Hopi and the Cree, who predict that “Warriors of the Rainbow” will save the world from environmental destruction.
It is from here that environmental campaign group Greenpeace coined the name for their environmental protection vessel Rainbow Warrior – the first one of the name was sunk by the French Secret Services in 1985 in Auckland Harbour as it was preparing to set sail for French Polynesia in order to protest against nuclear testing at the Mururoa Atoll. A new vessel, Rainbow Warrior 3, is being built by the Fassmer shipbuilding company in Bremen, Germany in time for Greenpeace’s 40th anniversary in 2011. It will be the first purpose-built ship to enter the Greenpeace fleet.
Indalo art utilises the so-called lucky Indalo symbol or shape to craft charmstones and natural pebble jewelry and necklaces based on the Indalo rainbow warrior symbol. The Indalo caves – where the Indalo symbol was first discovered in Almeria, Andalucia, were declared a National Historical Monument in 1924 – and are now a site of UNESCO World Heritage. Natural pebble jewelry with this eco-friendly and campaigning symbol appeals especially to people who are interested in holistic and ethical lifestyles.
