tomato plants slow to turn red and leaves are yellow, then brown?
I planted two sugar snack variety plants before mothers day. The tomatoes are much larger than they should be for this variety, but never turned red (until yesterday). Also, the leaves on one plant are now dry and brown on patches of the leaves. Started out that the leaves were yellow, now an ugly dry brown color. Just closer to the bottom. Top has nice green leaves and it is continuing to produce fruit. I live in the Atlanta area. Any help on why these are larger than normal and refused to turn, and also the strange leaf stuff would be helpful. I had wonderful plants last year and these are just weird!!
The Sugar Snacks are an indeterminite cherry variety that produce until frost. They take approximately 65 days from the day you planted them (in May) to produce red fruit which means they are in their correct DTM (days to maturity) for production. However, the leaf problem is another story. Without seeing a picture of the leaf, I would guess they were either under or overwatered. As far as the fruit being “larger” than normal, I would suspect you may have a different type of plant than the Sugar Snacks as they are strictly cherry sized. If you got them from Burpee, I would call them and see if anyone else is having the same problems in the chance you are given a refund. May I suggest trying heirloom tomatoes next time. I think you will notice a significant taste quality and Burpee sells them also. Best,
